LINEAGE. Constituted 328th Fighter Squadron on 29 Sep 1942. Activated on 1 Oct 1942. Inactivated on 10 Nov 1945. Redesignated 149th Fighter Squadron, and allotted to VA ANG, on 24 May 1946. 149th Fighter Squadron extended federal recognition on 21 Jun 1947. Redesignated: 149th Fighter Bomber Squadron in Dec 1951; 149th Bomb Squadron (Light) on 1 Dec 1952; 149th Fighter Interceptor Squadron on 15 Jun 1957; 149th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron on 10 Apr 1958; 149th Fighter Interceptor Squadron on 14 Jun 1958; 149th Tactical Fighter Squadron on 10 Nov 1958; 149th Fighter Squadron on 15 Mar 1992-.

OPERATIONS. Combat in ETO, 9 Sep 1943-25 Apr 1945. Called to active duty as part of the Korean War call-up, 1951-1952. Trained for bomb missions, 1952-1958. Air defence of South-East US, 1958-1962. Fighter bomber mission, 1971-1981, included several deployments to Red Flag and a deployment to RAF Lakenheath, England, in 1976. Close-air support mission, 1981-1992 which included deployments, to Ecuador, Norway, and Panama. Deployed to Howard AFB, near Panama City, on Jan. 20, 1990 for Operation Just Cause. Lead unit in a four-state Air National Guard F-16 “rainbow” detachment deployed to Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, to support Operation Provide Comfort II. Participated in Operation Northern Watch, patrolling the no-fly zone over northern Iraq, 1993, 1994 and1996; Operation Southern Watch, 2000; Operations Noble Eagle and Enduring Freedom, 2001-2002; Operation Iraqi Freedom, 2003. Set-up as a classic ‘associate wing’ the 192nd FW works directly with the 1st FW yet maintains its own unit identity and command structure. It shares in the support of mission requirements for the F-22A Raptor.
