USAF SPECIAL TACTICS RESCUE
USAF Special Tactics rescue operations are conducted by highly trained Pararescuemen (PJs), who are the only Department of Defense specialty trained for personnel recovery and combat search and rescue (CSAR). Supported by other Special Tactics personnel like Combat Controllers, Combat Rescue Officers, and Special Reconnaissance operators, they perform technical rescue, battlefield trauma care, and ex-filtration in hostile environments, often operating in remote areas.
Key Teams and Roles in Special Tactics Rescue
Pararescuemen (PJs): The core of Special Tactics rescue, PJs are special operations medics who provide battlefield trauma care and conduct the actual recovery of personnel. They are trained to operate in extreme conditions and perform technical rescues.
Combat Controllers (CCTs): These operators specialize in battlefield air traffic control, managing airspace and coordinating aircraft for extraction or support during recovery missions.
Combat Rescue Officers (CROs): CROs provide the leadership and command and control for CSAR operations. They plan and execute the six phases of combat search and rescue: prepare, report, locate, support, recover, and reintegrate isolated personnel and materiel.
Special Reconnaissance (SR) Personnel: SR operators provide intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, which is crucial for preparing and securing areas for rescue operations.
Special Tactics Officers (STOs): STOs lead Special Tactics Teams (STTs), providing command and control for a variety of missions, including personnel recovery.
