Lineage. Constituted as 81 Air Rescue Squadron on 12 Aug 1952. Activated on 1 Sep 1952. Inactivated in Mar 1954. Redesignated as 81 Expeditionary Rescue Squadron, and converted to provisional status, on 14 Apr 2003.

Operations. Prepared for overseas deployment, Sep-Oct 1952. Trained to meet rescue requirements in southeastern Europe; conducted search missions, overwater coverage for fighter movement and emergency air evacuation of ill and injured personnel, Nov 1952-Mar 1954. Provide rescue of isolated personnel from austere, denied objectives using night vision goggle (NVG)/adverse weather low-level, airdrop, air land, helicopter air refueling (HAR), and forward area refueling point (FARP) operations for the Combined Joint Task Force, Horn of Africa.
