Lineage. Constituted as 555 Bombardment Squadron (Medium) on 25 Nov 1942.  Activated on 1 Dec 1942.   Redesignated as: 555 Bombardment Squadron, Medium, on 9 Oct 1944; 555 Bombardment Squadron, Light, on 23 Jun 1945.  Inactivated on 7 Nov 1945.   Redesignated as 555 Tactical Fighter Squadron, activated, and organized, on 8 Jan 1964.  Redesignated as: 555 Tactical Fighter Training Squadron on 5 Jul 1974; 555 Fighter Squadron on 1 Nov 1991.  Inactivated on 25 Mar 1994.   Activated on 1 Apr 1994.

Operations. Combat in European Theater of Operations, 30 Jul 1943-3 May 1945.  Participated in operations, exercises, and tests of the Tactical Air Command, 1964-1966, including temporary duty with Pacific Air Forces, Dec 1964-Mar 1965, and Dec 1965-Feb 1966.   Combat operations in Southeast Asia, Feb 1966 until close of hostilities.  Destroyed 38 MIGs.  Two men of the 555th Squadron became aces: Capt Richard S. Ritchie and Capt Charles B. DeBellevue.  Transferred without personnel and equipment to Luke AFB, AZ in 1974; redesignated as a tactical fighter squadron; manned and equipped for new mission of providing tactical fighter training for US and allied military personnel.  Trained US military and selected allied military F-15 pilots, Jul 1974-Mar 1994. Some personnel deployed to Persian Gulf in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Nov 1990-Mar 1991.   Since, 1994, conducted air operations as required in support of US and NATO taskings, including Operations Deny Flight, DELIBERATE FORCE, ENDURING FREEDOM AND IRAQI FREEDOM.
