Lineage. Organized as 80 Aero Squadron on 15 Aug 1917. Redesignated as 492 Aero Squadron on 1 Feb 1918. Demobilized on 13 Feb 1919. Reconstituted and consolidated (1936) with 492 Bombardment Squadron which was constituted and allotted to the reserve on 31 Mar 1924. Disbanded on 31 May 1942. Consolidated (1960) with 492 Bombardment Squadron  (Heavy) which was constituted on 19 Sep 1942. Activated on 25 Oct 1942. Inactivated on 6 Jan 1946. Redesignated as 492 Bombardment Squadron, Very Heavy, and activated on 1 Oct 1946. Redesignated as 492 Bombardment Squadron, Heavy, on 20 Jul 1948. Discontinued and inactivated 1 Feb 1963. Redesignated as 492 Attack Squadron on 26 Mar 2019. Activated on 15 Apr 2019.

Trained for strategic bombardment operations, 1946-1963.
