184th INTELLIGENCE WING, DETACHMENT-1, SMOKY HILL AIR NATIONAL GUARD RANGE

Oversees the largest and busiest ANG bombing range in the nation. Smoky Hill encompasses 51 square miles of training space with over 100 tactical targets and electronic warfare range. Located 10 miles west of Salina, KS, Smoky Hill provides realistic combat training for military aircraft and ground forces from all the military services. Also provides unmanned aerial vehicle support for selected users.

Lineage. Designated the 127th Observation Squadron and allotted Kansas NG on 30 Jul 1940. Extended federal recognition on 4 Aug 1941. Inactivated in Nov 1945. 127th Fighter Squadron (SE) extended federal recognition and activated on 7 Sep 1946. Redesignated 127th Fighter Squadron (Jet) on 21 Feb 1950; 127th Fighter-Bomber Squadron on 1 Nov 1950; 127th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron on 1 Jul 1955; 127th Tactical Fighter Squadron on 1 Apr 1961. Reached group status with federal recognition of 184th Tactical Fighter Group on 1 Oct 1962. Redesignated: 184th Tactical Fighter Training Group on 25 Mar 1971; 184th Tactical Fighter Group on 8 Oct 1979; 184th Fighter Group on 16 Mar 1992; 184th Bomb Group on 1 Jul 1994; 184th Bomb Wing on 1 Oct 1995; 184th Air Refueling Wing on 16 Sep 2002; 184th Intelligence Wing on 1 Apr 2008-.

Assumed the responsibility of operating and maintaining the Smoky Hill Weapons Range at Salina, Kansas, 1 Oct 1973. Developed the F-4D Fighter Weapons Instructor Course to meet the needs of the USAFR and TAC, 7 Aug 1979. Conducted conversion and upgrade training in the F-16, Jan 1987-Jul 1994. B-1B bomber operations, 1994-2002. Worldwide aerial refueling operations, 2002-2007. Provide wartime support in the form of collecting and analyzing intelligence.
