170th GROUP

Lineage. Constituted as 170th Air Transport Group, and extended federal recognition and activated on 18 Jan 1964. Redesignated: 170th Military Airlift Group on 8 Jan 1966; 170th Tactical Airlift Group on 1 Jul 1973; 170th Air Refueling Group on 1 Apr 1977; Inactivated on 30 Sep 1993. Allocation to New Jersey ANG withdrawn on 1 Jul 2007. Detachment 1, Headquarters Nebraska ANG established in Jun 2002. Redesignated 170th Group and allotted to Nebraska ANG on 11 July 2007-.

Aircraft. C-121, 1964-1973; C-7, 1973-1977; C-131, 1977; KC-135, 1977-1993. RC-135, 2007-.

Operations. Long distance transport, primarily for passenger movements to Europe, also flew to the Caribbean and to Japan, Thailand, South Vietnam, Australia and the Philippines during the Vietnam War. Worldwide aerial refueling. Participated in OPERATION DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM. Under Det-1, NE ANG HQ, ANG instructor aircrew integrate into the 338th CTS to provide initial qualification, requalification and upgrade training to active duty and ANG aircrew members. Under the 170th Group, ANG personnel integrate into various sections within the 55th Operations Support Squadron to increase their capability to support the global operations of the 55th Wing, providing training and operational support to the active duty 55th Wing’s global command and control and intelligence missions
