Lineage. Organized as 116th Aero Squadron on 29 Aug 1917. Redesignated 637th Aero Squadron on 1 Feb 1918. Demobilized on 20 May 1919. Reconstituted and consolidated (1936) with 116th Observation Squadron which, having been allotted to NG, was activated on 6 Aug 1924. Ordered to active Service on 16 Sep 1940. Redesignated: 116th Observation Squadron (Medium) on 13 Jan 1942; 116th Observation  Squadron on 4 Jul 1942; 116th Reconaissance Squadron (Fighter) on 2 Apr 1943; 116th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron on 11 Aug 1943. Disbanded on 30 Nov 1943. Reconstituted on 21 Jun 1945. Redesignated 116th Fighter Squadron, and allotted to ANG, on 24 May 1946. 116th Fighter Squadron (SE) extended federal recognition on 10 Feb 1947. Redesignated: 116th Fighter Squadron (Jet) in Jun 1950; 116th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron on 1 Feb 1951; 116th Air Refueling Squadron on 1 Jul 1976-.
