Operations. An increasing number of unmanned military satellite projects reached maturity in the 1970s and 1980s. To manage these complex projects, some of which made possible verification of the arms control and nuclear test ban treaties, HQ USAF established an operational space command in 1982. The new command assumed responsibility for space related functions. On July 1, 1993, Air Force Space Command assumed command and control over the intercontinental ballistic missiles formerly assigned to the Air Combat Command. The Air Force Space Command serves as the USAF component of the United States Space Command and also of the United States Strategic Command.
