Lineage.  Designated as 185 Airways and Air Communications Service Squadron on 14 May 1948.  Organized on 1 Jun 1948.  Redesignated as: 1903 Airways and Air Communications Service Squadron on 1 Oct 1948; 1903 Communications Squadron on 1 Jul 1961; 1903 Information Systems Squadron on 1 Jul 1984; 1903 Communications Squadron on 1 Nov 1986; 836 Communications Squadron on 30 Apr 1991.  Inactivated on 1 May 1992.  Redesignated as 836 Cyberspace Operations Squadron on 17 Nov 2015.  Activated on 3 Dec 2015.

Operations. Provides premier Defensive Cyberspace Operations (DCO) maneuver/mission assurance capabilities to its mission partners and has administrative control over and responsible for organizing, training and equipping three Cyberspace Protection Teams (CPTs).
