823rd RED HORSE SQUADRON

Lineage. Constituted as 823 Installations Squadron on 19 Jan 1956.  Activated on 1 Jun 1956.   Redesignated as 823 Civil Engineering Squadron on 1 Jul 1960.  Discontinued, and inactivated, on 1 Oct 1961.  Redesignated as 823 Civil Engineering Squadron (Heavy Repair), and activated, on 6 Apr 1966.  Organized on 15 May 1966.  Redesignated as:  823 Civil Engineering Squadron, Heavy Repair on 15 Oct 1969; Inactivated on 15 Jul 1971.  Activated on 1 Jun 1972. Redesignated as: 823 RED HORSE Civil Engineer Squadron on 10 Mar 1989; 823 RED HORSE Squadron on 1 Mar 1994.

Operations. The 823d RED HORSE Squadron, or Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineer, provide the Air Force with a highly mobile civil engineering response force to support contingency and special operations capable of rapid response and independent operations in remote, high-threat environments worldwide with a heavy-repair capability and construction support when requirements exceed normal base civil engineer (Prime BEEF) capabilities and where U.S. Army engineer support is not readily available.
