Operations. Trained B-24 bomber crews in US, Apr-Oct 1943. Between 13 Dec 1943 and 25 Apr 1945, flew bombing missions from England against targets in Germany and German-occupied Europe. From 1952-1957, trained for fighter-bomber operations. Conducted flying training for airlift missions, 1957-1965. Recalled to active duty during Cuban missile crisis, Oct-Nov 1962, during which the squadron airlifted US Army troops and equipment to various parts of the nation. Augmented an active duty strategic airlift wing by flying that wing’s aircraft on contingency and channel missions and on training exercises, 1970-. From 1992, involved in various humanitarian missions including missions to Washington DC and New York City in aftermath of attack on US by terrorists on 11 Sep 2001. Airlifted NASA’s Mars Odyssey spacecraft from Buckley AFB, CO to Cape Canaveral, FL for its launch to orbit Mars, 4 Jan 2001. Supported Hurricane Katrina (Sep 2005) and Hurricane Ike (Sep 2008) relief missions.
