Lineage.  Constituted 606 Tactical Control Squadron on 5 Dec 1945.  Activated on 15 Dec 1945.  Redesignated 606 Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron on 30 Jan 1946.  Inactivated on 1 Oct 1957.  Activated on 16 Dec 1963.  Organized on 15 Jan 1964.  Inactivated on 1 Jul 1974.  Redesignated 606 Tactical Control Squadron on 13 Sep1976.  Activated on 15 Mar 1977.  Redesignated 606 Air Control Squadron on 31 Mar 1992.

Operations. Established a tactical air direction center at Shaw Field and operated a number of radars, including a CPS-4, CPS-5, MPQ-2, TPS-1B and TPS-10. Supported operations during the Korean War from Sep 1950-Jul 1953, with detachments spread throughout Korea. Provided early warning of communist air attacks and directed B-26s for support of friendly ground forces during periods of darkness. Reactivated and assigned to the USAFE assigned to the 86th Air Division (Defense) from Jan 1964-Jul 1974. Supported Operations DENY FLIGHT and PROVIDE PROMISE, 1994; Operation ALLIED FORCE, 1999; Air Expeditionary Force 9 and Operation SOUTHER WATCH, 2000; Air Expeditionary Force 10, Operation SOUTHERN WATCH and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, 2001-2002; Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, Operations PENINSULA STRIKE, DESERT SCORPION, DESERT SIDEWINDER and IVY SERPENT, 2003; Exercises HOLLAND FLAG and FALCON GUARD, 2005; Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, Operations KURBACH and MOUNTAIN LION, Operation MOUNTAIN THRUST, 2006. The 606th ACS is a self-contained mobile combat unit with 25 specialties that maintains equipment including the TPS-75 Radar, a Priority Level 4 Resource. The unit provides daily command and control to the 52d Fighter Wing’s three flying squadrons in addition to the occasional control of NATO AWACS from Gelsenkirchen AB and visiting aircraft from around the USAFE Theater.
