Lineage. Constituted as 380 Bombardment Group (Heavy) on 28 Oct 1942. Activated on 3 Nov 1942. Inactivated on 20 Feb 1946. Redesignated: 380 Bombardment Group (Very Heavy).  Allotted to the reserve and activated in the US on 16 Jun 1947. Redesignated 380 Bombardment Group (Medium) in Jun 1949. Inactivated on 16 May 1951. Converted to provisional status and allocated to Air Combat Command to activate or inactivate any time after 4 Dec 2001. Redesignated as 380 Expeditionary Operations Group and activated in early 2002-.

Operations. Operated primarily as a heavy bomber unit in the Southwest Pacific Theater. In addition to flying combat missions, the group operated as a training unit for Royal Australian Air Force crews in B-24 operations. Conducted combat operations to provide high-altitude all-weather intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, airborne command and control and air refueling for Operations New Dawn and Enduring Freedom, and Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa.
