213th SPACE WARNING SQUADRON

Lineage. Constituted as 213th Space Warning Squadron and activated on 30 Aug 2006-.

Assignments. Alaska Air National Guard, 30 Aug 2006-.

Stations. Clear Air Force Station, Alaska, 30 Aug 2006-.

System. Solid-State Phased-Array Radar System (SSPARS — pronounced “ES-pars”)

Operations. The 213th SWS is responsible for providing Early Warning of Intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBMs) and Submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBMs) and attack assessment of a ballistic missile attack against the continental United States and southern Canada. Warning data from the unit is forwarded to the North American Aerospace Defense Command inside Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Colorado. The squadron is also responsible for a portion of the Air Force Space Command Space Surveillance System and assists in tracking more than 9,500 space objects currently in Earth’s orbit

AN/FPS-108 COBRA DANE

The AN/FPS-108 COBRA DANE is a PESA phased array radar installation operated by Raytheon for the United States Space Force at Eareckson Air Station on the island of Shemya, Aleutian Islands, Alaska.[1] This radar system was built in 1976 and brought on-line in 1977 for the primary mission of gathering intelligence about Russia’s ICBM program in support of verification of the SALT II arms limitation treaty. Its single face 29 m (95 ft) diameter phased array radar antenna 52.7373°N 174.0914°E faces the Kamchatka Peninsula and Russia’s Kura Test Range.
