US SPACE FORCES-MOBILITY

The U.S. Space Force is actively developing its Servicing, Mobility, and Logistics (SML) enterprise to transform space from a static environment into an agile, maneuverable warfighting domain.

On-Orbit Refueling: Programs managed by Space Systems Command (SSC) plan to test and field satellite refueling in geostationary (GEO) and low-Earth orbit (LEO) starting with key demonstrations slated for 2027. Vendors like Orbit Fab, Astroscale, Starfish Space, and Northrop Grumman are building these prototype technologies.

Space Tugs & Augmented Maneuver: The military is deploying “space tugs” and orbital transfer vehicles (OTVs) to move satellites between orbits, breaking free from the historic limitation of fixed-lifespan fuel loads.

Rocket Cargo & Rapid Global Mobility: Through the Rocket Cargo Vanguard and Payload Delivery System (P2D) projects, the Air Force Research Lab and Space Force are working with commercial companies (including SpaceX, Blue Origin, Sierra Space, and Rocket Lab) to explore low-cost, large-scale ballistic or reentry cargo delivery to austere sites on Earth.

SpaceWERX Challenges: SSC runs dedicated open-call innovation tracks-such as the SpaceWERX In-Domain Orbital Logistics Challenge—to source commercial tech for orbital warehousing, debris cleanup, and propellant management.

Space Mobility Conference: Major defense and industry stakeholders gather annually at events like Space Mobility 2027 (scheduled for 11-14 Jan 2027, in Orlando, FL) to synchronize the defense space logistics supply chain
