Patrol Squadron FORTY SIX (VP-46) “Grey Knights” assigned to Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing Ten, (CPRW-10) based at NAS Whidbey Island, WA, operating the Boeing P-8A Poseidon multi-mission maritime aircraft squadron that conducts anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and humanitarian response.
The squadron was originally established as Patrol Squadron 5-S (VP-5S) on 1 Jul 1931. Redesignated Patrol Squadron 5-F (VP-5F) on 1 Apr 1933; Patrol Squadron 5 (VP-5) on 1 Oct 1937; Patrol Squadron 33 (VP-33) on 1 Jul 1939; Patrol Squadron 32 (VP-32) on 1 Oct 1941; Patrol Bombing Squadron 32 (VPB-32) on 1 Oct 1944; Patrol Squadron 32 (VP-32) on 15 May 1946; Medium Patrol Squadron (Seaplane) 6 (VP-MS-6) on 15 Nov 1946; Patrol Squadron 46 (VP-46) on 1 Sep 1948-.
Patrol Squadron FORTY SIX (VP-46) is the oldest maritime patrol squadron and the second oldest aircraft squadron in the USN, second only behind VFA-14.
