NATIONAL RECONNAISSANCE OFFICE (USSF)

The US Space Force and the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) have a strong partnership, particularly in the development, operation, and acquisition of space systems for national security. The NRO, a key agency within the U.S. Intelligence Community, relies on the Space Force for military personnel and expertise in space operations and engineering. This collaboration ensures the U.S. maintains its advantage in space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR).

The NRO and Space Force collaborate to advance the nation’s capabilities in space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.

The Space Force has a dedicated element within the NRO, led by the Space Force Element Commander who also serves as Deputy Director of the NRO). This element manages military personnel and resources assigned to the NRO.

The Space Force provides a significant portion of the personnel supporting the NRO’s workforce, particularly in areas like system development, operations, and engineering.

The Space Force and NRO jointly utilize launch services to deploy national security payloads, with entities like Space Systems Command and SpaceX involved.

While there have been some discussions about the specific roles of each organization, especially regarding commercial ISR acquisition, both the NRO and Space Force are actively working to clarify their respective responsibilities and foster collaboration.

Examples of Joint Missions:

The NROL-69 mission, launched in March 2025, exemplifies the partnership, with the Space Force’s Space Systems Command and Space Launch Delta 45, along with SpaceX, supporting the launch. Similarly, the NROL-174 mission in Apr 2025 involved collaboration with Space Systems Command’s Small Launch and Targets Division, Space Launch Delta 30, and Northrop Grumman.
