Lineage.  Activated, Marine Observation Squadron 951 (ASD (VMO-951) on 20 Dec 1943; Redesignated  Marine Observation Squadron 4 (VMO-4), 15 January 1944. Deactivated on 21 Oct 1945. Reactivated as Marine Observation Squadron 4 (VMO-4) on 1 Sep 1966. Deactivated on 31 Mar 1994. Redesignated as Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 4 (VMU-4) on 1 Jul 2010-.

Operations.  WW-II, VMO-4 was a fixed-wing squadron, providing gunfire spotting and liason services during the battles for Tinian-Saipan and Iwo Jima. VMU-4’s detachment mission in Yuma is to support training, including the Weapons and Tactics Instructor course. Once operational, to provide Marine ground forces with reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition. They also provide artillery spotting and can assist in search and rescue operations. Provide aerial fire support spotting and intelligence in support of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force.
