Special Operations Terminal Attack Controller Course

Personnel are trained in the technical and tactical skills and operational procedures necessary to effectively utilize rotary-wing and fixed-wing Close Air Support (CAS) assets in support of Special Operations Forces (SOF) missions. Personnel are trained in the capabilities and limitations of US fixed-wing and rotary-wing platforms and munitions, lasers and ground marking equipment, night and urban CAS, and close air planning and control. Personnel achieve Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) qualification by making a minimum of 12 live controls and evaluation IAW Joint Close Air Support (JCAS) Action Plan Memorandum of agreement 2004-01, Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) (Ground).

 

Joint terminal attack controller

Joint terminal attack controller (JTAC) is the term used in the United States Armed Forces for a qualified military service member who, from a forward position, directs the action of combat aircraft engaged in close air support and other offensive air operations. The term used historically and in other countries and the relevant NATO standard is Forward Air Controller. The term became effective on 3 September 2003 with the publishing of Joint Publication (JP) 3-09.3 Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTP) for Close Air Support.
