Lineage. Constituted 463rd Fighter Squadron on 5 Oct 1944. Activated on 12 Oct 1944. Inactivated on 27 May 1946. Redesignated 198th Fighter Squadron, and allotted to PR ANG, on 28 May 1946. Received federal recognition and activated, 23 Nov 1947. Redesignated: 198th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron on 1 Jul 1952; 198th Tactical Fighter Squadron on 10 Apr 1958; 198th Fighter Squadron on 15 Mar 1992; 198th Airlift Squadron on 1 Oct 1998-.

Operations. Combat in Western Pacific, 1 Jul 1945-14 Aug 1945. Air defense of Puerto Rico, 1947-1992. Primarily ground attack aircraft mission, but also had limited air-to-air combat capability. Converted to air defense fighters for the ANG, and would take over the fighter interception mission, providing the primary defense of North America against bombers and cruise missiles. Provide theater mobility, embassy support and airdrops.
