Lineage. Constituted as 187 Tactical Reconnaissance Group and allotted to Alabama ANG in 1962. Extended federal recognition on 15 Oct 1962; Redesignated: 187 Tactical Fighter Group on 1 Jul 1983; 187 Fighter Group on 15 Mar 1992; 187 Fighter Wing on 1 Oct 1995-.

Assignments. Alabama ANG, 15 Oct 1962-. (gained by: Tactical Air Command, 15 Oct 1962; Air Combat Command, 1 Jun 1992-).

Components. Groups. 187 Operations Group, 1 Oct 1995-. Squadrons. 160 Tactical Reconnaissance (later Tactical Fighter, Fighter), 15 Oct 1962-13 Sep 2007; 100 Fighter, 13 Sep 2007-.

Stations. Montgomery Regional Airport (later , Montgomery  ANGB), AL, 15 Oct 1962-.

Aircraft. RF-84F, 1962-1971; RF-4C, 1971-1983; F-4, 1983-1988; F-16, 1988-.

Operations. Initial mission was the air defense of Alabama. Mission change to daylight aerial reconnaissance. Called to active duty as part of the Korean War call-up, 10 Oct 1950-10 Jul 1952. Provide tactical, visual, photographic and electronic reconnaissance by both day and night, as was required by the military forces within the European command. Called to active duty as part of the Berlin Crisis call-up, 1 Oct 1961-31 Aug 1962. Converted to a tactical fighter mission in 1983. Deployed in support of Operations: Provide Comfort, 1995; Southern Watch, 1996; Northern Watch, 1997; Noble Eagle, 2001-2007; Iraqi Freedom, 2003, 2004 & 2006.
