70th AIR REFUELING SQUADRON

Lineage. Constituted as 470 Bombardment Squadron (Medium) on 9 Jul 1942. Activated on 16 Jul 1942. Disbanded on 1 May 1944. Reconstituted, and consolidated (19 Sep 1985) with 70 Air Refueling Squadron, Medium, which was constituted on 3 Jun 1955. Activated on 1 Aug 1955. Redesignated as: 70 Air Refueling Squadron, Heavy on 1 Nov 1963; 70 Air Refueling Squadron on 1 Sep 1991. Inactivated on 1 Apr 1993. Activated in the Reserve on 1 Sep 1994.

Between 1976 and 1993, flew both air refueling and airborne command and control missions. Supported contingency missions to Grenada in 1983 and to Panama, Dec 1989-Jan 1990. Deployed aircrews and aircraft to Europe and the Arabian peninsula during the Persian Gulf war, 1990-1991. Flew air refueling missions worldwide, 1994-. After 11 Sep 2001 attack on the U. S., supported Operations Enduring Freedom, Noble Eagle and Iraqi Freedom; supported Hurricane Katrina relief effort in Sep 2005.
