148th FIGHTER WING

Lineage. Constituted as 179th Fighter Squadron and allotted to the Minnesota National Guard on 24 May 1946. 179th Fighter Squadron (SE) extended federal recognition on 18 Sep 1948. Redesignated: 179th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron on 1 Dec 1952. 148th Fighter-Interceptor Group extended federal recognition on 1 Jul 1960. Redesignated: 148th Tactical Reconnaissance Group on 10 Jan 1976; 148th Fighter-Interceptor Group on 15 Nov 1983; 148th Fighter Group on 15 Mar 1992; 148th Fighter Wing on 11 Oct 1995-.

Assignments. Air Defense Command, 1 Jul 1960; Tactical Air Command, 10 Jan 1976; Air Combat Command, 1 Jun 1992-.

Operations. Called to active duty as part of the Korean War call-up, but remained in Duluth, 1 Mar 1951-1 Dec 1952. Provided all weather, high or low, day or night, selective reconnaissance as a TRS. Air defense of Northern US as well as Florida with a remote detachment , Det-1 alert at Tyndall AFB, FL. 1970 William Tell Weapons Competition Winner. Combat Air Patrols over our nation’s capital and New York City after 9/11. Providing air-to-ground combat and delivering guided and unguided bombs.
