Lineage. Constituted 159 Fighter Squadron (SE) and allotted to the Florida ANG on 24 May 1946. Extended federal recognition on 9 Feb 1947. Redesignated 159 Fighter Squadron (Jet) on 1 Aug 1948; 159 Fighter Bomber Squadron on 1 Nov 1950; 159 Fighter Interceptor Squadron on 10 Jul 1952. Reached Group Status with federal recognition of 125 Fighter Interceptor Group on 1 Jul 1956; 125th Fighter Group on 15 Mar 1992; 125th Fighter Wing, 1 Aug 1995-.

Operations. Provide air defense for the southeastern United States. Called to active duty as part of the Korean War call-up, 1950-1952. Competed in William Tell 1958 and 1976. Performs a continuous NORAD 24-hour alert mission (Detachment 1), standing ready to intercept, identify, and, if necessary, destroy unknown aircraft which penetrate sovereign U.S. airspace.
